Fraudsters regularly pose as recruiters from real companies to take money or personal information from job seekers. Knowing the warning signs protects you.
Warning signs
- They ask you to pay for registration, training, a “security deposit”, uniform, visa or medical — especially to a personal bank account or UPI ID.
- They guarantee the job before you have had a real interview.
- They use personal email addresses (gmail.com, outlook.com) or numbers not listed on the company's website.
- They create urgency — “pay today or the offer lapses”.
- The offer looks unprofessional: spelling mistakes, no company letterhead, a salary far above the market for the role.
- They ask for OTPs, passwords or card details. No genuine employer needs these.
How to verify a recruiter
- Find the company's official website yourself — do not use a link sent to you.
- Check that the role is listed on that website.
- Contact the company through the phone number or email published there, and ask them to confirm.

If you have been targeted
Stop all contact and do not make any further payment. Report the fraud on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in or call the national cyber-crime helpline, 1930. If the fraudster used ETHANOVA's name, please tell us at recruitment@ethanovaconsulting.com.
